Almost Friends follows Charlie, a man in his mid-20s who has dropped out of college and moved back in with his mother and stepfather. He works at a small movie theater, but he still dreams of becoming a chef. He falls for Amber, a coffee shop worker who has a serious boyfriend and plans to leave for college in New York. The film mixes quiet comedy with awkward romance, family trouble, and the hard work of growing up.
Charlie keeps visiting Amber even when she seems uncomfortable, and their friendship grows into a confusing love triangle. Amber is not only a prize for Charlie, because she has her own plans, doubts, and a pregnancy that changes her choices. Charlie also faces his absent father’s return and must decide whether to keep hiding from adult life. The story ends with Charlie choosing a chef job in New York, while the romance remains less certain than his future.
