Cursed follows Nimue, a young Fey woman who lives in a magical version of medieval Britain. After Red Paladins burn her village and kill her mother, Nimue receives the Sword of Power and must take it to Merlin. She joins Arthur, a struggling mercenary, as several armies fight for control. The season has a dark and violent fantasy tone. The ending leaves Nimue's fate unclear.
The show makes Nimue the main hero of the Arthurian story and turns her into a queen and war leader before Arthur becomes king. It presents the Fey as a hunted minority and makes the Red Paladins an extremist Christian army. The conflict makes persecution and freedom part of nearly every episode.
