Franz Jägerstätter is an Austrian farmer who lives with his wife, Fani, and their daughters in the mountain village of St. Radegund. When Germany takes control of Austria, the army orders Franz to swear loyalty to Hitler and fight in the war. Franz refuses because his Catholic faith and sense of right and wrong will not let him serve an evil government. The film follows the pressure on his family, his arrest, and his long wait for death in a quiet and serious style.
