Archive follows George Almore, a robotics engineer living alone in a remote lab in Japan in 2038. He is building a human-level artificial intelligence while secretly trying to place his dead wife’s stored mind into a robot body. His older machines become jealous and unstable as he gives the newest model more care and power. The film has a cold, quiet, and tense science-fiction tone, with grief and mystery driving the action.
The film uses George’s grief to ask what makes a mind human and whether a copied mind can still be a person. J1, J2, and J3 have female bodies because each robot grows from the stored mind of George’s wife. George gives the newest model more care and takes parts from J2, which makes his control over the robots a key moral problem. The ending turns the mystery toward guilt, death, and the limits of technology.
