Ethan Campbell is an in-demand tutor who works for rich families in New York. He accepts a very well-paid job teaching Jackson, a gifted teen at a remote waterfront mansion. Jackson knows private facts about Ethan, enters his home life, and seems set on ruining his bond with his pregnant partner, Annie. The movie uses a dark and uneasy tone as Ethan loses his job, his good name, and control of his own story.
Jackson's strange closeness to Ethan first looks like an unhealthy crush, but the story later shows that he planned a revenge trap. Ethan once had an affair with Jackson's mother, and his lies about her death hold the main mystery together. The final fight exposes Ethan as a selfish killer who will hurt Annie and their unborn child to save himself. The main themes are guilt, revenge, family damage, class anger, and the danger of trusting a carefully made public image.
