Lauren Curran is an artist who is still grieving the death of her baby and dealing with bipolar disorder. She and her husband, Russel, move into The Pinnacle, a luxury smart apartment building outside Portland because it seems safe. Lauren hears strange sounds and sees quick flashes on the television, but Russel and her doctor think her illness is returning. The film has a tense, gloomy tone as Lauren tries to learn whether the building is harming her or whether she is losing touch with reality.
Lauren finds help from Vernon, a hacker and journalist who believes the building is part of a mind-control test. The owners use hidden sounds, images, cameras, and drugs to control the residents and push Lauren toward killing a child. The story follows Lauren as she tests what is real, loses trust in the people around her, and tries to protect the girl. A final trick saves the child and exposes the plan, but the last home still carries a warning about smart technology.
