Rust follows Lucas Hollister, a teenage boy who cares for his younger brother on the harsh American frontier of the 1880s. Lucas accidentally kills a rancher while trying to shoot a wolf, and a judge sentences him to hang. His estranged grandfather, the outlaw Harland Rust, breaks him out of jail and leads him toward Mexico while a marshal and bounty hunters chase them. Long rides, gunfights, cruel law, and family secrets give the film a grim and slow Western tone.
The story builds its main bond between two damaged men who do not trust each other at first. Lucas must face guilt over the death, while Rust must face the harm caused by his violent past. Family duty, mercy, grief, and the cost of killing shape their journey. The hard court, the Bible-carrying bounty hunter, and the many battles make the frontier feel dangerous, while the journey places family and redemption beside fear and violence.
