Ethan Lightman is a college student who has built a machine that should send electricity without wires. After his parents die in a car crash, Ethan leaves school and returns home to raise his younger brother Matt and younger sister Becca. He keeps working on the machine in the garage while he holds the family together and tries to pay the bills. The machine opens a path for ghosts, and a quiet family drama turns into a slow supernatural horror story about grief, guilt, and the danger of refusing to let the dead go.
The remake changes the youngest child from a boy in the earlier film Ghost from the Machine into Becca, a girl, and gives her a key role in the ghost story. Hannah helps Ethan with the science, while Matt and Becca face the spirits and work with him to protect the family. The siblings first believe that their parents have returned, but Ethan learns that dangerous ghosts are using their grief. The main story stays focused on family duty, lost parents, love, fear, and the choice between a world-changing invention and the people who need Ethan.
