The Act is an eight-episode crime drama about Gypsy Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee, in Missouri. Dee Dee keeps Gypsy trapped by pretending that she has many serious illnesses. Gypsy slowly learns the truth and looks for a way to live on her own. Her plan involves an online romance, violence, and murder. The show has a dark, tense, and disturbing tone.
The show focuses on abuse, control, family lies, disability fraud, and the hard choices Gypsy makes while trying to escape. It shows Dee Dee fooling doctors, charities, neighbors, and officials. It also shows Gypsy gaining freedom through a dangerous relationship instead of through a simple heroic escape. The story does not make modern identity politics, diversity campaigns, or activist ideas a major part of its message. Its main social point is that abuse can stay hidden behind a caring public image.
