The Enemy Within follows Erica Shepherd, a former CIA leader who is serving life in prison for treason. FBI agent Will Keaton brings her out to help catch Mikhail Tal, the spy who once controlled her. Keaton blames Shepherd because Tal’s actions led to the death of Keaton’s fiancée. The show is a serious, fast crime thriller about trust, fear, family, and betrayal.
The show has a diverse cast, with a white female lead and a black male FBI lead, plus several other ethnic backgrounds in the team. Erica is shown as highly skilled, but the story explains her skills through her CIA career rather than identity politics.
