Kat Baker is a gifted figure skater in the Idaho resort town of Sun Valley. After a hard fall causes a head injury and fear on the ice, she tries to rebuild her career as a pair skater with Justin Davis, a rich and troubled former bad boy. Kat also hides her bipolar disorder while dealing with her unstable mother Carol, her younger sister Serena, and the pressure of Olympic competition. The show is a dark adult drama with soap-opera romance, family fights, sexual danger, drinking, self-harm, and painful sports injuries.
The clearest woke elements are side stories about race and sexuality rather than the main skating goal. Marcus is a black skier in a mostly white sport, and his dating life leads to direct talk about race. Dasha’s past and later contact with Tatiana show that she once loved a woman and gave up that relationship for skating.
