Salvation follows Liam Cole, an MIT student who discovers that an asteroid will hit Earth in six months. He joins tech billionaire Darius Tanz and Pentagon official Grace Barrows to find a way to save humanity. The group hides the danger while building a rail gun, a solar sail, and a secret ark. The show mixes science fiction, government secrets, romance, conspiracy, and political suspense.
The show has a visibly mixed cast, including women and ethnic-minority characters in important government, science, and technology jobs. Those choices are noticeable, but the story does not make identity or representation a main subject.
