Matilda Gray is a rising cello player in London whose mother kills herself in front of her. A box of old news reports sends Matilda and her friend Hal to Penllynith, a small Welsh village where a four-year-old girl vanished in 1994. Matilda suspects that she is the missing girl and that her mother hid the truth about her past. The six-part story moves from grief and family secrets into a tense supernatural mystery about a house, a local cult, and a force that may control people.
The show focuses on grief, memory, family ties, and the search for a true identity. Matilda's stubborn search causes trouble for Rose, Trudy, Hal, and the local police as old wounds return.
