Jimmy Fonda is a child psychologist who is taken to a hidden military site to study Ellie, a nine-year-old girl with a genius mind and deadly psychic powers. The adults have locked her in a small room and plan to kill her and study her body. Jimmy starts a tense battle of questions, chess, and trust with the child. He must decide whether Ellie is a monster or a hurt person who can still change.
Ellie spends most of the film outsmarting the doctors and soldiers who watch her, while Jimmy slowly earns her trust. The story gives the central power and most of the sharpest lines to a young girl, but it uses that choice for a dark science-fiction mystery. The main ideas are guilt, trauma, mercy, and the danger of treating a person like a lab object. The mood stays grim and tense, with small moments of dry humor and a hopeful ending.
