FBI agent Daria Francis arrives in the small North Dakota town of Devil’s Gate after a past case left her shaken. She joins local deputy Colt Salter to search for Maria Pritchard and her young son Jonah. The search leads them to Maria’s guarded husband Jackson, who keeps an alien-like creature locked in his basement. The movie starts as a missing-person crime story and turns into a grim science-fiction horror tale about abduction, family fear, and invasion.
Daria works as a capable FBI investigator, but her arc centers on guilt from a failed case and the search for a missing family. Colt acts as a steady local partner, while Jackson’s faith, anger, and fear drive much of the danger. The movie treats religious certainty and family desperation as sources of danger, then explains the strange events through aliens, body changes, and a plan to replace humans.
