In 1933, Welsh journalist Gareth Jones travels to the Soviet Union to learn how Stalin can claim success while the country is poor. He reaches Ukraine and finds villages crushed by forced farm policies, hunger, fear, and death. Soviet police try to stop him, while Western reporters and officials help hide the truth. Gareth returns to Britain and fights to publish what he saw, even when powerful people call him a liar.
The film treats the famine as a man-made crime and follows Gareth's growing need to make the public listen. It shows how leaders, newspapers, and ordinary citizens can accept a comforting lie when the truth is hard to face. George Orwell appears in a side story about how Gareth's reporting may have helped shape Animal Farm. A small love story with journalist Ada Brooks adds a personal thread, but the main focus stays on hunger, courage, propaganda, and the cost of honest reporting.
