Maria Brennan is a shy 17 year old who feels alone at school and at home. Her father Dan works as a plastic surgeon and judges Maria's looks. Her mother Amy lives with deep sadness and troubling dreams. Maria discovers that the girl in her mirror can speak, and the girl calls herself Airam.
Maria and Airam trade places after cruel students hurt Maria. Airam acts with confidence and harms the people who hurt Maria. The story shows beauty pressure, bullying, family pain, and the fear that anger can turn a person cruel. Dan offers Maria surgery to change her face, and a secret about her twin makes the family story darker.
