In 1991, Daniel Middleton spends a summer with his aunt on Cape Cod after his father's death. The shy teenager meets Hunter Strawberry, a local drug dealer who pulls him into selling marijuana to tourists and bigger criminals. Daniel also falls for Hunter's sister, McKayla, while hiding the romance from Hunter. The story mixes teen romance, crime, partying, sex, violence, and a stormy coming-of-age mood.
Daniel wants to become important, while Hunter wants to escape a future that feels small. McKayla is tough and independent, but the movie also shows her through the boys' attraction and gossip. The story treats fast money, lies, sex, and drugs as a summer fantasy that turns dangerous. Hurricane Bob ends the fantasy and leaves the characters facing loss and the cost of their choices.
