Review
Friend Request is a 2016 horror thriller about popular college student Laura who accepts a friend request from lonely classmate Marina on a Facebook-like site. When Laura unfriends her after Marina becomes obsessive, Marina dies by suicide on video and her ghost then uses social media to kill Laura’s friends one by one until Laura is left completely isolated. The story uses a supernatural curse tied to unfriending as its main horror device and lightly shows the downsides of online popularity and shallow digital friendships through the killings and isolation. No identity politics, activist dialogue, or modern social-justice themes stand out in the plot, characters, or presentation.
Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Friend Request.
Woke representation / casting
The cast features typical young actors for an American college setting with no visible push for diversity quotas, race or gender swaps, or identity signaling that mismatches the story.
Woke political dialogue
The script contains no political speeches, activist lines, or ideological debates; dialogue focuses on friendship, obsession, and horror events.
Identity-driven story themes
Marina is portrayed as a lonely social outcast seeking connection, but the conflict is personal revenge and supernatural isolation rather than any exploration of group identity, systemic bias, or social justice issues.
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film offers a basic warning about how social media can amplify isolation and superficial relationships through its curse premise, but avoids framing this as a critique of capitalism, patriarchy, traditional norms, or Western institutions in an activist style.
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No reports of woke complaints, backlash over representation, or accusations of agenda-pushing; the only controversies were about the film's poor critical and commercial performance.
Creator track record context
Simon Verhoeven previously directed a comedy engaging with Germany's refugee debate in a lighthearted way, and Matthew Ballen worked on an LGBTQ-themed drama; however, these do not appear to shape any political messaging in Friend Request.
