Simone and her younger brother Rasmus leave an underground bunker after a virus carried by rain kills most people in Scandinavia. They join young survivors and cross Denmark and Sweden while looking for their missing father and a cure. The group faces Apollon, a science company that helped create the virus and wants to control it. The show begins as a tense survival thriller, then becomes a darker story about family, trust, power, and rebuilding.
The main identity signal is Simone's long rise as the group's central leader and moral guide. Seasons 2 and 3 also give Fie the key biology work and Kira much of the group's tactical skill. Several male characters are weak, reckless, or controlled by the virus, while Rasmus becomes the main danger. The story treats these roles as part of survival and family loyalty, while the larger conflict remains about science, power, and rebuilding.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Rain.
Woke representation / casting
Simone leads the survivor group and repeatedly drives the cure plan. Fie is the main biologist in seasons 2 and 3, and Kira supplies much of the group's tactical skill. Male characters often follow, fail, or become the main danger, while the cast remains mostly Scandinavian and white. The show does not turn race or gender into spoken politics, but its repeated female leadership is easy to notice.
45%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The show has survival arguments about curing or spreading the virus. It does not use recurring lines about modern identity politics, gender roles, or DEI.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The show repeatedly places Simone at the center of decisions about life, science, and the future. Seasons 2 and 3 also make Fie’s scientific work and Kira’s fighting skill important to the group’s survival. The story favors empathy, shared duty, and rebuilding over Rasmus’s plan to give everyone the virus. These themes are visible, but the show does not present them as a modern identity campaign.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Apollon is a corrupt science company that creates the virus, tests on people, and seeks control. That conflict serves the survival plot and does not become a wider attack on Western culture, religion, family life, or modern identity groups.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original story and does not adapt known characters or historical figures. It therefore has no identity-based rewrite of an established character or source.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reported reactions focus on plot holes, pacing, character choices, and the rushed final season. No meaningful anti-woke backlash says that the show pushes DEI, identity politics, or left-wing messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Most listed creators and crew have low or zero cached woke scores. Mette Heeno and Natasha Arthy have recurring female-centered work, while Josefine Kirkeskov has used social themes and Erik Barmack has a diversity-focused industry record. The group has no strong activist persona tied to The Rain itself.
