June McDaniel is a sixteen-year-old girl from northern England who runs away with her boyfriend, Harry. June wants to escape her strict stepfather, while Harry wants a life beyond caring for his sick father. Their trip turns dangerous when June learns that fear can make her take another person's form. The story moves from England to a hidden place in Norway where Dr. Halvorson studies women like June.
