Indian director, producer and advertising filmmaker whose work repeatedly engages with personal autonomy, gender, violence, racism and colonialism. His debut, Let’s Talk, centered on a married woman’s pregnancy from an extramarital relationship and explored competing emotional responses rather than treating the issue conventionally. Neerja presented a woman’s courage and leadership at the center of a national drama, while Aarya followed a woman navigating organized crime and family responsibility. In interviews, Madhvani has discussed inclusivity, humane filmmaking and the influence of strong women on his female characters. His later historical work has explicitly addressed British colonialism, racism, prejudice and cultural domination; he has described one racist incident he experienced as a personal motivation for confronting those themes onscreen. He is not known primarily as a partisan activist, and much of his long career has been in commercial advertising and genre storytelling, but the recurring focus on women’s agency and anti-colonial or anti-racist themes supports a moderate representation- and social-issues-oriented profile.
