Orson Welles was an influential American director, actor, writer, producer, stage artist, and broadcaster whose career spanned theater, radio, film, and television. He was a self-described progressive and supported Franklin D. Roosevelt, internationalism, anti-fascist causes, and New Deal politics. His public work repeatedly addressed racism and civil rights: he campaigned on radio for justice for Black veteran Isaac Woodard after Woodard was beaten and blinded by police, wrote and spoke against racial hatred, and supported anti-racist and anti-antisemitic causes. His films and broadcasts often examined concentrated power, propaganda, corruption, class, and media manipulation, though these themes were generally political and humanist rather than part of a modern DEI or identity-activist persona.
