Buster Moon is a hopeful koala who runs a worn-down theater in a busy city of talking animals. The bank is about to take the building, so he sets up a city-wide singing contest to bring crowds back and save his stage. Many animals try out, and the story follows a few of them, including a tired pig mom, a shy elephant, a young gorilla, a punk porcupine, and a flashy mouse. The tone is bright and funny, full of well-known pop songs, jokes, mishaps, and big performance moments.
The film follows each singer’s personal path more than any big social message. The pig mom wants to feel free again after years of caring for her huge family. The gorilla wants to play piano instead of joining his dad’s crime crew. The shy elephant works hard to beat her fear of the crowd, and the porcupine leaves a selfish boyfriend and writes her own song. The story stays on dreams, hard work, family, and putting on a great show for the city.
