Tommy Walcott is a lonely man in his late thirties who lives with his mother after a breakup and a dull work life. Andy Samberg offers him one million dollars to join a dark web game where hunters try to kill him for 30 days. Tommy learns that the hunters cannot attack when he is with someone else, but his family and friends do not believe him. The film mixes nervous jokes, danger, paranoia, and a search for friendship.
The story treats friendship and family contact as better answers than isolation and the cash prize. Tommy must learn to trust Walter, Maddy, and the people around him.
