Animal follows Ranvijay Singh, the angry son of Balbir Singh, a rich Indian steel business owner. Ranvijay has always wanted his father's love, but Balbir spends more time on business than on his family. When an attack leaves Balbir in danger, Ranvijay returns from the United States and gathers relatives and armed men. He starts a bloody hunt for the people behind the attack, even as his anger puts his wife and children at risk.
The movie gives most of its attention to violent ideas about manhood, family loyalty, and control. Ranvijay calls himself an alpha, treats women mainly as wives and mothers, and says marriage needs fear and control. His wife Gitanjali argues with him, calls out his choices, and asks for a divorce after he cheats on her. The story keeps returning to his need for his father's approval, so the mood stays intense, cruel, sexual, and shocking.
