Person profile
Creator Context
Zoya Akhtar is an Indian director, writer, and producer whose career repeatedly centers women’s autonomy, class, gender roles, social marginalization, and LGBTQ representation. Her work includes Luck by Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do, Made in Heaven, Gully Boy, Lust Stories, The Archies, and the LGBTQ-focused docuseries In Transit. Across interviews, she has discussed the underrepresentation of women and LGBTQ people in Indian cinema, the importance of authentic storytelling, consent, and providing marginalized communities with visibility. Made in Heaven and In Transit place queer identity and social acceptance at the center of their creative framing, while several other projects examine patriarchy, family power, class privilege, and restrictive expectations placed on women. She is not primarily a partisan activist, and much of her work is commercial and entertainment-driven, but the repeated representation-first themes and public emphasis on gender and LGBTQ visibility support a firmly above-average score.
