Person profile
Creator Context
Italian cartoonist and filmmaker Michele Rech, known as Zerocalcare, developed a strongly left-wing public persona alongside his commercial success. His early involvement in Rome’s social centers and participation in the 2001 G8 protests shaped recurring anti-authoritarian and antifascist themes. Kobane Calling documented his support for Kurdish resistance and its emphasis on women’s liberation, multicultural coexistence, and economic redistribution; later work has continued addressing fascism, policing, political violence, precarity, refugees, and marginalized communities. He has produced campaign materials for activist causes and repeatedly framed his comics as openly committed rather than politically neutral, while retaining a humorous autobiographical style. His activism is substantial and recurring, though he has also expressed fatigue with public controversy and does not present himself as a formal politician.
