Summary

Poomani is an acclaimed Tamil novelist and filmmaker whose career consistently centres rural, working-class and marginalised communities. His novels Vekkai, Piragu and Agnaadi examine caste hierarchy, land conflict, labour exploitation, poverty, religion, political violence and the social consequences of historical change, often giving narrative weight to Dalit and other subordinated communities. His writing also places women, children and ordinary labourers at the centre of literary fiction rather than treating them as background figures. Poomani has said that his work is driven by empathy and human relationships that can challenge caste and religious divisions, while also objecting to caste and religious politics.
