Turkish director, screenwriter, producer and photographer known for austere, psychologically focused dramas about provincial life, class, alienation, education, morality and social hierarchy. His films often observe Turkey’s political and economic tensions indirectly rather than presenting overt ideological arguments; critics have read their attention to authoritarian modernization, privilege and marginalization as socially political.
