Indian director and writer known for emotionally introspective relationship dramas and journeys of self-discovery. Across films including Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar, Highway, Tamasha and Amar Singh Chamkila, he repeatedly gives women prominent, psychologically distinctive roles and has said that women are often more intelligent or socially ahead of men. He has described being fascinated by women’s resilience within restrictive social roles, while his work frequently examines personal freedom, gender expectations, repression, mental health and the tension between social convention and individual identity. In 2024 he participated in an IFFI panel on women’s safety in cinema, arguing that the industry cannot tolerate gender injustice and that filmmakers have responsibilities toward the dignity and representation of women on screen and behind the scenes.
