Winchester is a 1906 ghost story set in Sarah Winchester's huge San Jose house. Sarah is the widow of the man behind Winchester rifles, and she thinks gun victims now haunt her. A drug-dependent doctor named Eric Price comes to judge whether she can still run the company. He finds possessed child Henry, sealed rooms, and a violent spirit that turns the house into a trap.
The film makes Sarah's guilt over deaths caused by Winchester rifles a real part of its plot. She keeps records of people who died and builds rooms for the spirits she thinks need peace. This gives the horror story a light anti-gun feeling, but the movie does not turn it into a present-day debate. Its main focus stays on ghosts, family loss, secrets, and escape from the house.
