French is a skilled martial arts teacher who runs a small gym in Los Angeles. The gym is losing money, so he accepts work from Tommy, a mob-connected lender, and joins the debt collector Sue. Sue has years of experience, drinks heavily, and treats each job as routine. The weekend starts with threats and fistfights, but the job becomes darker when a client asks them to hunt down an Irish bartender named Conor.
French soon learns that Conor may be innocent and that the order comes from a jealous crime boss who wants revenge. French must choose between obeying the mob and protecting a father and his young daughter. Sue follows the rules of the trade for much of the story, but the two men begin to question what their work is doing to them. Their bond grows through dry jokes, hard fights, and shared danger, while the cow scenes give the film a dark picture of people being used and discarded.
