Detectives Jake Doyle and Mary Kelly investigate a new set of murders in a present-day American city. The victims are arranged as angel-like art pieces, which match the work of a killer known as the Artist. The Artist is locked in a mental hospital, but he offers clues if the police help him avoid execution. Jake and Mary follow his riddles while a copycat attacks, and the case becomes a supernatural trap.
Mary has a past shaped by a strict and harmful father who used fears of hell to control her. The case uses churches, angels, old paintings, demons, and stories about possession to make a dark mood. Mary’s skills and her personal fears both matter as she faces the Artist and tries to save the lieutenant governor. The story focuses on murders, religious horror, trauma, and a surprise about who the killer controls.
