Person profile
Creator Context
Russell Mael is the singer and co-founder of Sparks, the art-pop duo he has led with Ron Mael since the early 1970s. Across albums such as Kimono My House, No. 1 in Heaven, Lil’ Beethoven and later theatrical projects, Sparks has repeatedly embraced camp, gender play, eccentric characters, sexual ambiguity and resistance to conventional ideas about masculinity and pop stardom. Russell’s public persona is primarily artistic rather than activist, and he has not built a reputation around DEI campaigns, party politics or organized social-justice advocacy. In recent interviews he has acknowledged a bleak political zeitgeist and criticized the direction associated with a certain American president, but this is limited compared with the duo’s long-running emphasis on artistic independence, wit and theatrical experimentation.
